Good morning ,
This last week, I learned something in motherhood through another mom online. I learned that my role is not to make my child “behave.” As moms, we can be so focused on the behavior part that we forget to speak to the heart of the child. The Bible tells us in Proverbs 4:23: “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
It’s a wonder why nothing has worked, or has worked for a very short amount of time. It’s the heart that needs to be changed. In all honesty, I’d love to go in and flip the switch to make my kids listen to whatever I ask them to do, or not do. That would be better and much easier for me. However, it’s not my role to change anyone’s heart. I can’t even change my own heart. It’s God that transforms our hearts, and when he does, it’s done. It’s then that we can truly flow with love, patience, grace, gentleness, and all the other fruits of the spirit.
This past week, I’ve looked at behavior as an opportunity to speak to Denver’s heart and share truth with her. I’ve reminded her of what God says. I’ve realized the most important thing isn’t that she obeys me, but that she learns to obey what God says.
It’s interesting to me how much God is changing me in this process. I’ve begun to recognize my errors and ask God to forgive me. I’ve realized my greatest role as a mom is to point my kids to Christ. God made my kids. He knows them better than I ever will. I’ve begun to pray for my kids differently. I believe I’ve started to heal in a place that I had no idea was broken. And it’s all glory to God. In his gentleness, he has begun to lovingly point things out to me, and we are to do the same for our kids.
